We started a
community gospel choir in Amsterdam in September of 2008. The choir is open to
anyone interested in joining. This puts people in contact with the gospel every
week through singing, memorizing and learning the gospel message. It also gives
an opportunity to develop relationships and build trust with people who would
otherwise never go to church. We have had more than 75 people participate in
the first three seasons. Of those, there has been a mix of Christians from
various churches and non-Christians who just love to sing and want to be
involved in a choir.
Last year, one of
the choir members said she believed in God but didn’t see the point of church
and all that religious stuff. However, after the first concert she said she
knew why God wanted her to join the choir in response to a postcard she
received in her mailbox. She had been estranged from her stepsister for more
than four years, and her sister “just happened” to come to the concert. They
were reconciled right during the intermission. And now this year both sisters
are singing in the choir together.
This is just one example of what God is doing through this unique ministry. The
best testimony is when asked what they like best about the choir, the majority
of the members say the people, the friendships and the love.
