A Growing Church With Growing Needs
The Assemblies of God in Africa continues to grow exponentially. We rejoice but also remember that Africans deal with enormous struggles. War, political instability, drought, starvation, weak economies, HIV/AIDS, poverty and polluted water are but a few of the problems people, including believers, face daily. Missionaries and church leaders are constantly working to respond to these needs.

Maintaining The Harvest
The positive crisis in Africa is training leaders to sustain growth. Discipling new believers is essential, and Bible schools are the key. Africa’s Hope is facilitating training, education and resources that equip the church in Africa to disciple nationals in the power of the Holy Spirit. Besides resident and extension Bible schools, we are training workers through seminars and institutes and providing pastors with resources to assist them in the learning process.

Addressing HIV/AIDS
The HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa is staggering. The United Nations estimates that 55 million Africans will die from AIDS during the next 15 years. In southern Africa, 20 percent of adults are living with AIDS. Nearly 50 percent of the populations of Botswana and Swaziland are infected. Cry Africa, our HIV/AIDS outreach, is working to heighten awareness among churches and establish effective ministries for those affected by the disease.

Missionaries and national believers are distributing literature and teaching AIDS prevention in churches, schools and public gatherings. National fellowships and missionaries are partnering to develop children’s homes, drop-in centers and shelters for children and mothers with HIV/AIDS.

Ministering to Children
Africa’s children represent a major challenge. More than 44 percent of Africa’s 900 million inhabitants are younger than 15. Most of these children live with the devastating effects of war, homelessness, hunger, disease and exploitation. More than 40 percent of children younger than 5 are moderately to severely stunted in their physical growth.

We are addressing children’s spiritual needs through presenting the gospel while also addressing their physical needs. Through the generosity of U.S. AG believers, Africa’s Children provides food, medicine, clothing, education, evangelism outreaches and camps to help children grow to become responsible adults who serve Christ.

The HIV/AIDS pandemic has left thousands of orphaned children living on the streets with little access to food or education. Africa’s Children has led the way in supplying shelter and food in homes and care centers. Now national churches are catching the vision to provide for the physical, spiritual and educational needs of street children.

Providing Clean Water
About 400 million people in Africa lack sufficient safe water for drinking, sanitation, cleanliness and cultivation. In an effort to meet this dire need, the Africa regional office formed Africa Oasis Project. Working in cooperation with like-minded ministries, this effort seeks to pursue clean water initiatives on the continent. Each initiative involves the cooperation of local and national church leaders as well as community leaders. In some places, government officials are offering land to build churches if the project also includes digging a well on the site.

Buildings For Growing Churches
Hundreds of congregations in Africa do not have church facilities. Since 1992, Africa Tabernacle Evangelism has assisted fledgling congregations by providing prefabricated steel structures that will seat several hundred people. U.S. believers assist in erecting the roof and steel girders, and the national congregation completes the walls, floors, doors and windows. Many people come to Christ during the dedication of a new facility.

The problems we face in Africa do not cause us to despair. We are trusting in God’s all-sufficient power to help us meet each challenge with joyful expectation for His provision.
